Dr Summerbee gives the pill to 16-year-old Debbie White and her friend Jenny. But her good intentions have many village parents up in arms, when Debbie's parents accuse her of going too far and question her morals. The Royal Inspector is due at Ashfordly Police Station on Friday, but Craddock is frustrated when a local hooligan keeps vandalising police property/vehicles. He also wants his men to be calm, dignified, and to go with good humour. But that's easier said than done. Vernon and David slug it out verbally over messy dishes, food being eaten, and Vernon accuses David of having a woman at their place. But then they learn the bizarre truth: an unwanted visitor. Continued from last episode. When Carl Lomax admits to vandalizing the police station and vehicles, he is remanded in custody. But he breaks out and he and his girlfriend Debbie run away together. Debbie's parents and the rest of Aidensfield continues to put pressure on Dr Summerbee, but Debbie's parents soon change their mind about Carl, and so do the Police. Mike is saddened by his divorce. Vernon's latest business venture is slot machines, but his business sense even attracts laughter from an inanimate machine! But his real problems start when a mysterious technician does "maintenance" on the slot machines.

Vernon's past catches up with him by the arrival of Igor Saukas, who he once made a deal with concerning umbrellas that turned out to be faulty, and Vernon thinks he's out for revenge. However, he is shocked when Igor offers him another deal, this time to sell Lithuanian Peat (as a replacement for coal). MI5 agent Clive Denby is in Aidensfield investigating Igor Saukas. Craddock is forced to give him assistance, but what will MI5 smoke out? Meanwhile, Dr Summerbee is concerned for her patient Eamon Maxwell, who she suspects of being suicidal, when he is repeatedly seen on the railway tracks near his home.

A number of legacies have gone missing from Lord Ashfordly's African collection during a series of dinner parties, so when another dinner party is planned, new PC Tom Nicholson is sent undercover to investigate. Chief Daniel Moketso arrives to reclaim the legacies by legitimate means, and post-graduate research student Patrick Mason is at Ashfordly Hall to research these legacies. Meanwhile, Vernon tries his luck at running a taxi service, but he and David end up in custody because of their customer's absent-mindedness.

Betty Hargreaves is suspected of terrorising her patients at the nursing home which she runs, and when she is suspected of helping two OAPs into their graves, Oscar begins a private investigation. She is also suspected of a spate of petty thefts, including Alf Ventress's warrant card! Meanwhile, David gets a job of clearing the houses of deceased people, but he lands himself and Vernon in trouble when he empties the wrong house. PC Mike Bradley and Dr. Tricia Summerbee clash over his investigative practices, but warm to each other.

When Ashfordly Hall opens its doors to the public, a number of Lord Ashfordly's treasured possessions are stolen. It does not help when a local paper has a picture of Ventress sleeping on the job. Investigating further, Ventress and Mike discover one of the guests touring Ashfordly Hall is an ex art thief, but he is now in his 80s. And when PC Tom Nicholson goes to question the suspect, Tom is knocked down by an intruder. Meanwhile, Vernon hopes to mix business with pleasure with Lord Ashfordly, but the insurance company soon puts a stop to that.

When Tom responds to a robbery at a factory, he becomes involved in a bitter war between factory Works Manager Neville Sawyer and factory owner Trevor Shields. A machine explodes and suspicions initially fall on Sawyer, but the Inspector of Factories quickly closes the factory down, holding Trevor responsible. Another accident puts Trevor in hospital. Meanwhile, Vernon organises a beauty pageant at the village hall, but Councillor Joyce Jowett is eager to put a stop to his plans.

When Geoff Lawson returns home to find hippies squatting in his two cottages, the police are unable to act against them because Lawson failed to put security on the cottages. He gets a Possession Order, but the squatters use a legal loophole to evade eviction. Frustrated, Lawson takes the law into his own hands, putting one of the squatters lives in mortal danger—or was it Lawson? Vernon finds that relying on one of the squatters for pottery can be problematic.

Two criminals take a manageress of a building society and her young son hostage whilst they plan a robbery, but she gets a coded message out to Ventress who is an old customer of the building society. Ventress relates his suspicions, so Craddock sends Tom to watch the house. Meanwhile, Vernon begins a pet cemetery but a supposedly dead pig trashes Bernie's garage, so Bernie seeks Blaketon's assistance to stop Vernon's scheme. Craddock decides that Tom should move in with Mike into the Aidensfield Police House. A series of food poisoning cases has police on their toes, and has Tricia Summerbee suffering the effects of overwork. It's not Ventress who nods off, this time.

Dr Summerbee is delighted when her old friend Heather Conway comes to stay for Christmas. However, it appears Heather is trying to run away from something. Heather dismisses it as "the media", but trouble is, her past has followed her to Aidensfield and Craddock and his men find themselves dealing with London Gangsters. A guide dog (Peggy, belonging to a blind woman) has gone missing, and there are very few leads, until an article appears in the paper. Meanwhile, Vernon promises Joyce Jowett that he will organise the Christmas decorations for the village, and his usual trick of stealing a tree goes off OK, but the lights are a different matter.

When armed robber Charlie Draper becomes a victim in a hit-and-run whilst performing a robbery, Craddock is under pressure to find the hit and run driver and the missing money, but Charlie escapes hospital custody when Tom falls asleep on duty. The police question Charlie's old partner-in-crime Jack Wetherby, but he only admits to stealing the car for Charlie – and didn't even know about the robbery plans. Vinnie Sanders, a famous cricket player, turns up at the Aidensfield Arms after his car breaks down, so Oscar organises a cricket match. But why is the cricketer so interested in the robbery story, while the robber is so interested in the cricket story in the newspaper? Meanwhile, Left alone to run Bernie's Garage, David takes a delivery of fuel, and causes a petrol crisis around Aidensfield. But he becomes the accidental hero.

When Walter Aims dies in mysterious circumstances, the police find plans for various armed robberies in his basement. Doctor Summerbee has an important clue about Walter, and Police realise that all the robberies have occurred several years ago, except one. They stake out the intended crime venue (the bank in Ashfordly), but the crime actually occurs elsewhere. Craddock faces personal problems by the reappearance of his wife Penny, and he must make a difficult decision about his future in Aidensfield. Meanwhile, Vernon has a new business venture. Scripps’ Roaming Holidays (horse-drawn wagons). Problem is, the horses are cantankerous.

His replacement is Dennis Merton, an ex CID who discovers someone who he has been trying to nail for years is now causing criminal activities in Aidensfield, but Ventress, Mike, Bellamy and Tom are out of there depths when they find themselves in the middle of a major CID operation. Meanwhile, David has joined the gym and befriends boxer Jeremy Purves. Unlucky for David, Vernon thinks there is money to be made out of boxing.

Two criminals capture PC Tom Nicholson, however, and take him to a nearby airfield where they plan to escape by air and take the stolen money with them. However there is a struggle and PC Tom Nicholson is shot dead. Meanwhile, Vernon Scripps tries his hand at managing a brass band.

But will it be down to him when the shooting goes horribly wrong? Meanwhile, David has trouble getting to grips with Vernon’s latest business venture, and almost destroys half the village. Vernon can’t help due to having a very serious boil, and goes to hospital for medical attention. A teenage crush gets out of hand, when top student Josie Peters writes about her teacher in her diary. Her father suspects something so prevents her from going on a field trip, citing lack of money. But when the school offers assistance, Mr Peters says he doesn't want charity and pays for the field trip anyway. But did he get the money by mugging his boss the night before? Josie's actions lead to her getting caught in very deep water, and it is up to Mike to save her. Meanwhile, David is pre-occupied by a dummy called Enoch, which was left to him by Ventriloquist Ernie Dobson, when he died. He fills in for one of Ernie's bookings, but he puts most of the audience to sleep. Two property buyers are in town, and Gina is asked out by one of them (Alex Robinson, who is staying at the Aidensfield Arms), to a function at Ashfordly Hall. Partly continued from previous episode. Gina attends a function at Ashfordly Hall with Alex Robinson (in her car, because his had a flat tyre), but after some time doesn't feel too well. She wakes up in a farm field and soon discovers she is suspected of a hit and run accident that has killed Ian Sinclair, but Oscar is determined to prove Gina is in the clear. There's Robinson asking for a doctor, property purchase negotiations, tyre tracks, time trials, Robinson calling for a taxi, a diary, blood tests, a row that Gina supposedly had with Robinson, a leather bag, and a spare tyre under repair. They all add up to so many clues to be unravelled, but are property buyers Sinclair and Robinson partners, or rivals? Meanwhile, Vernon is struggling to complete a crossword, and it isn’t going to be helped when he is hired to transport and keep an eye on two young girls, Sylvia and Linda, who are singers in a band. But when the music gets too much for him, he sends young David to do the job instead – and the girls are very happy to have him. After confronting Sgt Merton, and Jenny, Ray Richard’s actions that follow leave Tricia’s life hanging in the balance. Meanwhile, Vernon has a new business idea, but it is fair to say that neither Bernie, David nor Gina are best pleased. Vernon is pre-occupied with hypnotism, when he discovers that Gina is afraid of spiders, however, his actions leave David barking mad. Meanwhile warm feelings emerge between Dennis and Jenny. He had been driving a tanker, the contents of which only Vernon knows, but it seems to be seeping into the river leading to the water board, making the people of Aidensfield ill. David claims no knowledge of the contents, and the hospital staff won’t let the police talk to Vernon. Meanwhile, nobody is allowed to use the tap water, while the contents of the tanker are being analysed. After an angry confrontation with the hospital staff, Dennis is forced to relax to save his temper, and he is helped by Jenny.
