The Hawthorne Christian Academy (HCA) is a co-educational private Christian school system, serving students in Pre-school through 12th grade. The Academy is a ministry of the Hawthorne Gospel Church, and is located on Route 208 in Hawthorne, New Jersey, United States. The school opened in 1981 and had its first graduating class eight years later.[3]

As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 493 students (in Pre-K thru 12)[4] and 44.8 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 9.2:1.[1]

HCA has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1996.[5] The school has been accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International since 1981.[6]

Athletics

Since a realignment of all high school athletic leagues in northern New Jersey took effect in the fall of 2010, Hawthorne Christian has been a member of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference, which operates under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).[7] Given the school's small size, the school initially was not accepted to participate in any of the area sports leagues. Following a decision by the NJSIAA in February 2008, Hawthorne Christian Academy and Saddle River Day School joined the Olympic Division of the Bergen County Scholastic League as of September 2008.[8][9]

The school has achieved success in track and field competition. The school's Lindsay Van Alstine broke the Passaic County record in the 3200m with the seventh-fastest run in state history.[10]

The boys soccer team has made it to the semifinals of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Parochial North B state championship tournament, falling 2-1 in 2000 to eventual runner-up Don Bosco Preparatory High School,[11] and by a 5-0 final score in 2003 to eventual winner Morristown-Beard School.[12]

Academics

Over the past 4 years academics at Hawthorne Christian have increased, culminating in the class of 2010. That year, HCA sent students to top 10 liberal arts colleges, and universities. As well as having 5 students accepted at Wheaton College (Illinois), a career high. Other institutions added to the HCA accepted list include The University of Chicago, The College of New Jersey, Davidson College, Middlebury College, and Vassar College. Another highlight of the class of 2010 was the fact that 100% of graduates went to 4-year institutions, an Academy first.
