Hawler Medical University is located in Erbil (Kurdish: Hewler), capital of the Arbil Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan. It was established in 2005.

The university is made up of five colleges:

The university also includes a Medical Research Center.

History

Hawler Medical University is located in the city of Erbil (Hawler), the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan Region. Hawler Medical University was founded by the Council of Ministers of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government in July 2005 and was endorsed by the Council of Ministers of the Iraqi Federal Government in March 2006.

The university was established to include in itself the four colleges that were belonging to Salahaddin University in Erbil; College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy and College of Nursing. The separation has come after a suggestion made by a number of academics from these colleges supported by the presidency of Salahaddin University as well as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The university was expanded later to include the College of Health Sciences and the Medical Research Center

Aim of Hawler Medical University

The overall aim of establishment of Hawler Medical University is to improve the medical education in the Kurdistan region as well as to have a better management of the mentioned colleges. This did not mean that the colleges were newly founded, but a new management structure was adopted while the oldest college, the College of Medicine, was founded in 1977.

Establishment of a university for medical group colleges was by itself the first experience in Iraq.

Hawler Medical University provides undergraduate and graduate studies in different medical and health sciences. All the study programs in the university are in the English language.

The University is under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Erbil.

Hawler Medical University is progressing very well to establish itself as a modern and successful centre of medical and health education and research with the efforts of a committed and talented staff and the support of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

The success of Hawler Medical University is intended to promote its services to the community in Kurdistan region and Iraq as a whole.

The ultimate goal of Hawler Medical University is to be an innovative centre of excellence in learning and research of medical and health sciences in the country and the region.

Vision and Mission

Hawler Medical University is intended to be an innovative centre of excellence in learning and research while supporting students and researchers committed to assisting the community. The aim is to promote the development of students to reach their true potential in becoming competent, ethical, caring and inquiring doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, midwives and laboratory technicians as well as visionary leaders.

Hawler Medical University is committed to academic freedom and the principles of equal opportunity with no discriminations in delivering its services and applying knowledge with high standards of intellectual, educational and research productivity. It is intended to become a learning institution that provides education and research services in all fields of health and education like a modern medical university in a well-developed country
