Harris Academy Bromley is a secondary school located in North Beckenham in the London Borough of Bromley. The academy takes in girls between the ages of 11 and 18 and in 2011 the school joined a federation of academies in South London called the Harris Federation named after the Lord Harris of Peckham who is sponsoring them. Prior to its transformation into an academy, the school was known as Cator Park School.
History
Harris Academy Bromley, previously known as Cator Park School for Girls, opened in 1919. In World War II the school was used as a hospital for many injured soldiers in the Beckenham/Bromley vicinity.
The Academy
Harris Academy Bromley state that they encourage their students to have drive and ambition, to aim high, work hard and always achieve their personal best, combining the best of modern teaching, with an emphasis on the traditional values of manners, good behaviour and smart uniform.
Through the development of their learning ethos of CORE, they encourage the girls to become Committed, Optimistic, Resourceful and Enterprising.
2012 was a historic year for the school with the best ever GCSE results where 66% of girls gained 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and mathematics.
The Academy claims they have specialisms in Science and Enterprise alongside a broad, balanced and rigorous curriculum. The sixth form joined the Harris Federation Post 16 in September 2012. The Academy is set for major improvement in facilities in the next few years with a new build set for completion and ready for September 2017.
Harris Federation
Harris Federation is a federation of Primary and Secondary academies in and around London. There are currently 27 open academies in the federation and another 8 are planned. The schools spread over a range of boroughs, some being the London Borough of Croydon, London Borough of Southwark, London Borough of Bexley, Borough of Thurrock,London Borough of Merton, London Borough of Bromley, City of Westminster and more...
The academies' sponsor is Phil Harris (Lord Harris of Peckham), the chairman and chief executive of Carpetright. The federation is a not-for-profit charitable organisation whose stated key aim is "to promote the education of young people in South London". The group is generally oversubscribed in most of its Academies, particularly Harris City Academy Crystal Palace with an average of 1,500 applicants for 200 spaces.
The Chief Executive Officer is Sir Daniel Moynihan, previously Principal of the Harris City Academy Crystal Palace. He is the full-time CEO at the Harris Federation Headquarters in Croydon. The Federation aims to grow to 25 or more Primary and Secondary Academies in the next few years.
On 18 February 2011 it was announced that Kelsey Park Sports College (Harris Academy Beckenham) and Cator Park School (Harris Academy Bromley) would convert into Harris Academies for September 2011, the first Harris Academies to open the London Borough of Bromley.
Faculty Structure
Under the Harris Federation the previous House system was overhauled to be known as a Faculty structure which is seen in all Harris Academies. The four faculties are now Blue, Yellow, Red and Green which are made up of different subject areas under the leadership of an Assistant Principal.
