Guppy is a 2016 Indian Malayalam drama film written and directed by Johnpaul George. Chethanlal[lives]and Tovino Thomas plays[lives] the lead roles in the film, along with Sreenivasan, Rohini, Sudheer Karamana, and Alencier Ley Lopez in supporting roles.[1] The film was released on 5 August 2016.

Plot

The story revolves around a boy named Guppy (Chethanlal) who finds his living out of rearing and selling the small fish Guppy. Guppy has this dream of buying an automatic wheel chair for his ailing mother (Rohini). Things gets into turmoil when Engineer Thejus Varkey (Tovino Thomas) comes to the seaside village for the construction of a railway bridge. Many unexpected things occur when a small rivalry starts between Guppy and Engineer.

Release

Guppy was originally scheduled to release on 29 July 2016, but due to some procedural issue in getting the film censored, the release was postponed to and released on 5 August 2016.[3] The film was released in 72 theaters across Kerala.

Critical reception

The film received positive reviews from critics.

Times of India gave a rating of 3/5 and mentioned that drector and scriptwriter Johnpaul George deserves credit for weaving the beautiful tale[4]

The Hindu mentioned that in Guppy director Johnpaul George is visibly eager to bring on screen everything he ever wanted to shoot and ends up packing in just a little too much.'[5]

Malayala Manorama gave a rating of 3/5 and said that 'While it's a thumbs up for the maiden directorial venture, one is too tempted to sing 'beauty, beauty everywhere, but a good number of edits short of being a fine film' [6]

'Lensmenreviews' notable malayalam film critic gave a rating of 4/5 and said that' Guppy 'invites you to its plot and shows you its world. The characters, their dilemmas, the streets, that auto rickshaw etc. stays with you for some strange reasons[7]

Entertainment website Sify with its inherent honesty, debutant director Johnpaul George’s Guppy is a good film that has its fine moments[8]

Home Media

'Guppy' garnered excellent reviews after the DVD release which prompted lead actor Tovino Thomas asking through Facebook about re-releasing the movie in theaters again.[9] The lead actor said that after the release of the DVD, he has been receiving a lot of messages from people who regret missing out on the movie in theaters.[10] It also has to be noted that the film Guppy did win positive reviews from all those who watched the film from the theaters, but still the film was unable to sustain in the box office.
