Gary Wien is a music journalist from Belmar, New Jersey and author of Beyond the Palace and Are You Listening?.[1]
Work
Beyond the Palace was the first comprehensive look at the Asbury Park rock and roll scene which launched the careers of such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, and Bon Jovi.[2] Are You Listening? was his own list of the top 100 albums of a decade which was compiled from a six-month review of over 2,220 releases.[3]
Wien is a three-time winner of the Asbury Music Award for Top Music Journalist and was the founder and publisher of Upstage,[4][5] which won an Asbury Music Award for Top Music Publication (becoming the first publication to ever beat out The Aquarian for the award). Wien has written for several publications including Princeton Magazine, Backstreets, Upstage Magazine, and had a chapter in Debra L. Rothenberg's book Bruce Springsteen In Focus 1980-2012. He currently writes for NewJerseyStage.com and Jersey Arts, and runs the online radio station ThePenguinRocks.com. In July 2014, he launched a new monthly interactive magazine called New Jersey Stage at http://www.NJArtsMag.com
