Fred Rochelle

Fred Rochelle was a black teenager from Bartow, Florida that on May 29, 1901, was lynched and burned alive following the murder and rape of a white woman, Rena Smith Taggart, the day before.[1]

Legacy

Ossian Sweet, in his testimony during the Sweet Trials in 1925, recalled having seen Rochelle being lynched when he was five years old.
