First Star Software, Inc. is a Chappaqua, New York computer game development, publishing and licensing company,[1] founded by Richard Spitalny (who remains the company's president) and Fernando Herrera in 1982. It is best known for its classic Boulder Dash franchise[2] and Spy vs. Spy titles, originally written for 8-bit home computers like the Apple II, Atari 400/800, and Commodore 64. Millions of units have been sold in both the Boulder Dash and Spy vs. Spy series of games, with Boulder Dash appearing in the coin-operated arcades four times.
The company's games were also licensed to be ported to several video game consoles, such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the SEGA Master System. From 2002 on, First Star Software has published its games for PCs; portable devices, like PDAs, handheld game consoles, mobile phones and smartphones and tablets. Boulder Dash-ROCKS! for the Nintendo DS was released in November 2007,[3] while another sequel: "Boulder Dash-XL 3D" for the Nintendo 3DS was released in October 2012.
Other games recently released include "Spy vs Spy" for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad in partnership with Robots & Pencils. Released in late July 2012 the app quickly became the #1 Top Paid App for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad in the United States and many other countries. "Boulder Dash-XL" was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox Live Arcade in 2011 as well as "Boulder Dash-The Collection" for Android smartphones and tablets. "Boulder Dash-Pirate's Quest" was released in 2010 on Windows and macOS computers across numerous leading game portals.
