Erich Christian Werlauff
Erich Christian Werlauff ( 2. July 1781 - 5. June 1871 ) was a Danish historian and professor.
Life
Werlauff was the son of the Norwegian-born koffardikapitajn (captain of a merchant ship) Jens Werlauff († 1786) and Wilhelmine Frederike f. Wirth († 1804). He was born in Copenhagen in 1781. In 1798 he became custodian of the Royal Library's reading room. In 1802 he graduated with honors. For this library he worked until 1861 . He was second secretary in 1805, the first secretary in 1814, librarian in 1823 and head librarian 1829. At the same time Werlauff affiliated with the University of Copenhagen. After being awarded his doctorate in philosophy in 1808 on the thesis The Ario multiscio, antiquissimo Islandorum historico[1] he was appointed assistant professor at the university (15 August 1810) and read about Nordic history and antiquities. 24. February 1812 he became professor extraordinarius and 5 December 1821 Professor ordinarius. 1836 - 1837 he was university rector and held at the inauguration of the new university building the first Danish speech that has been held at a college party (so far were such talks held in Latin). He retained his position at the university until he was honorably discharged because of age 31 December 1867. De facto, he was exempted to hold lectures in 1852.
