Dumai Express 10
The Dumai Express 10 was an Indonesian ferry that sank on November 22, 2009. The ferry encountered a storm on its way from Batam Island to Dumai and was hit by waves three to six metres (10–20 feet) high. About 30 minutes after departure the ship was hit by a large wave.[1] The wave split the starboard (right) side of the ship, causing it to take on water rapidly and sink about 20 minutes later.[2]
An Indonesian health official indicated that the ship was carrying 291 people; although the ferry had a capacity of 273, overloading is common.[3] Captain Johan Napitupulu denied that the ferry was overcrowded and indicated that they had no warning of a storm at the time of departure.[4]
An estimated 245 have been rescued, 29 are dead, and 17 remain missing.[4]
