Deathmatch Classic is a first-person shooter multiplayer video game developed and published by Valve. It is an updated version of the multiplayer aspect from id Software's Quake, featuring enhanced textures, models, and lighting.[1] The game was released as a freeware modification for Half-Life on Microsoft Windows on June 7, 2001,[2] and included in Half-Life's version 1.1.0.7 update, released on July 11, 2001.[3] Ports of the game to OS X and Linux were released through Steam on August 1, 2013.[4]

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to the deathmatch aspect from Quake's multiplayer, with essentially the same weapons, armor and power-ups. Deathmatch Classic also imitates Quake's physics, which allows an advanced player to gain a lot of extra speed or jump very high by using a number of movement skills such as bunny hopping and rocket jumping. The weapons scale from the basic shotgun to the rocket launcher and the "shaft", a powerful directed-energy weapon. Three kinds of bonuses are scattered over the maps, which give the player a temporary special power: "quad damage", "invulnerability", and the "ring of shadows" which turns the player into a ghostly, almost invisible figure.
