Dead End Derby (DED) is a flat track roller derby league based in Christchurch, New Zealand. It consists of two teams "the DED All Stars" and "Living Dead Rollers" who compete against teams from other leagues. The "Home Teams" -The Filthy Habits, The Cellblock Brawlers and Carnage Academy have been retired. DED now hold themed exhibition bouts during the year. Previous themes have included Heroes vs Villains, Fairies vs Grinches (A mid-winter Christmas bout) and Vampires vs Zombies (Halloween).
Founded in Nov 2007 by controversial NZ skater Cherry Blunt and her sister Crass, along with MissChevusMynx, Mystique, Bitch n Famous, Stevie Nails, Blood Angel and Ur shadow they formed 3 teams The Filthy Habits ( known for their spectacular musical entrances ) Cellblock Brawlers ( who had their own rowdy fan cheerleaders "the blue crew" ) and Carnage Academy ( undefeated Tequila Mockingbird Cup champion school girls )
The league played its first bout in September 2009,splitting the league into two demo teams "Hellbound Harlots" and "S.A.S" bringing in the countries largest roller derby crowd at the time of around 2000 people [1] and in 2011 it played in the nation's first inter-island bout, when it took on Richter City Roller Derby, from Auckland.[2]
Four skaters from the league were selected to play for Roller Derby Team New Zealand in the 2011 Roller Derby World Cup. Hurrican Hori, MisshevusMynx, Black Panther and Evil K Knevil. The national team captain, Hurricane Hori, is a former Dead End Derby skater.[3] The New Zealand team placed 8th out of 13 teams.[4] In 2012, Dead End Derby put on a major bootcamp for fifty skaters, coached by Bonnie D.Stroir, a coach of Team USA.[5]
In 2015, Evil was again picked to represent New Zealand at the Roller Derby World Cup. New Zealand were placed sixth. At the end of the 2015 season, The DED All Stars were ranked third in New Zealand and Living Dead Rollers were ranked 10th.
DED was accepted into the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Apprentice Program in July 2016. The Living Dead Rollers had an undefeated 2016 season, placing first in the Mainland Mayhem: South Island Division 2 Tournament. DED All Stars placed second in the 2016 New Zealand Derby Top 10 Champs.
