China Rehabilitation Research Center

The China Rehabilitation Research Center is a rehabilitation hospital founded in 1988 in Beijing, China. The 700-bed center treats approximately 300,000 patients a year.

History

The foundation of CRRC was initiated with the support of Deng Pufang, the son of Deng Xiaoping, who suffered a traumatic spinal injury during the days of the Cultural Revolution. Along with a group of physicians and important persons he promoted the concept of rehabilitation which was not yet established in China. They managed to get support from the authorities.

Construction started in 1986 and was finished within 18 months, officially opening on October 28, 1988. CRRC became the very first rehabilitation hospital in PR China. The Center got international attention and received support from Japan, Canada and Germany among others.

The hospital was originally built to serve 600 patients, but presently about 900 patients are treated there.

Functions

The CRRC primarily treats patients with physical disabilities from conditions such as: spinal cord injury, stroke, malformation or trauma of the musculoskeletal system. The center emphasizes integration of western and traditional Chinese medicine. In addition there is an outpatient department and an emergency room for the acutely ill.

The hospital is the center of a network of more than 200 rehab hospitals in PR China, and receives high-profile cases, such as the “basketball girl” Qian Hongyan.

CRRC is also a teaching hospital and research center.
