China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation
The China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) (Chinese: 中国扶贫基金会) is a Chinese non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in March 1989. It is currently the largest and most influential NGO that specializes in poverty alleviation in China.[1]
The NGO consists of 26 sub-divisions, and is headquartered in Beijing with around 80 staff, whose area of expertise include economics, agriculture, finance, industrial and commercial management, as well as social development. CFPA recently established plans to develop community-based centers in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.[2]
Actions
The CFPA aims to achieve their missions through active donation and outreach project initiatives. Since 1989, the CFPA has accumulated an amount of ¥2 billion (approximately $315 million) in aid and has helped over 40 million individuals afflicted by poverty.[3]
Projects
Microfinance Project
The project aims to help people who are unable to get credit from banks, especially women. It also aims to provide financial support to the poor, increase self-sustainability and independence of the poor and support the development of the organization itself. The CFPA is also an affiliate of the Mercy Corps Partnering with banks and founding banking institutions, Mercy Corps facilitates microfinance around the world.)[4]
As of February 2007, CFPA's Microfinance Project has set up 10 subsidiaries nationwide, managed loans of ¥68.5 million, and has effectively provided assistance to over 21,000 people.[5]
Action 120: Maternal and Infant Health Project
This project was initiated by CFPA in 2007, with the goal of supporting poor mothers and infants, reducing fatality rate of pregnant mothers and infants. The project aims to reach to at least 10 countries by 2010, assisting up to 2.5 million people.[6]
New Great Wall Project
This project targets the poor tertiary students who consists of 20% of current tertiary student populations. This group of pupils face both financial difficulties and psychological pressure. Through the project, CFPA provide three forms of support to these students:
- Annual financial aid of ¥2,000 (approximately $330) per person
- In areas where poor tertiary student density is high, CFPA organises Self-Support Societies to improve the overall capabilities of the students
- Provide employment training, guidance and assistance to enhance their employability
Disaster Relief Project
Since 2001, CFPA actively seeks funding and relief supplies from international organisations, both local and overseas enterprises, and from the public to support its disaster relief projects. At the end of 2006, relief supplies accumulated were worth ¥170 million, while relief funds amounted to around ¥3 million. ¥150 million worth of supplies and about ¥3 million has been used to help the poor who are affected by the disaster.[7][8]
