The Charles Mears Silver Lake Boardinghouse is a boardinghouse located at the outlet of Silver Lake, near Mears, Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site[2] and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.[1]
History
Charles Mears was a Chicago lumberman who controlled timberland and owned mills across Michigan.[3] Mears built a number of boardinghouses for his workers, as did other lumbermen;[2] this boardinghouse was constructed in 1866.[4] Mears's boardinghouses were unique in that they were also open to the general public.[2]
Description
The Charles Mears Silver Lake Boardinghouse is a two-story, rectangular structure measuring 70 feet (21 m) by 28 feet (8.5 m), with a one-story wing kitchen measuring 25 feet (7.6 m) by 25 feet (7.6 m) connected to one side.[2] There are four rooms on the main floor, seven on the second, three more in the kitchen wing, as well as a cellar and attic.
