Chalceus is a genus of characins from South America, from the Orinoco and Amazon Basins, as well as rivers in the Guianas. They typically reach a length of 20–25 cm (7.9–9.8 in) and are predatory, feeding on insects, small fish, and the like. The currently described species in this genus are:
