Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) is an international hub of creative minds. The integrated structure creates a unique environment that encompasses world-renowned education, a cutting edge research group, an award-winning consultancy and a startup incubator. The overarching objective for CIID is to create impact through the design of innovative products, services and environments.

Founded in 2006, Simona Maschi is the CEO and the CIID board is made up of Chairman Jakob Riis (EVP Novo Nordisk), alongside Lars Pedersen (LXP Consulting), Gillian Crampton Smith (Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, IUAV University, Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Royal College of Art), Mads Øvlisen (Former CEO of Novo Nordisk, Former Chairman of LEGO, Former Chairman of the Danish Art Council, Member of the Global Impact Board, Adjunct Professor at Copenhagen Business School), Michael McKay (PayPal), Matt Jones (Google Creative Lab), David Helgason (Technologist & Entrepreneur), David Rose (Product designer, serial entrepreneur, MIT Media Lab researcher) and Anders Frandsen (Rud Pedersen Public Affairs).

Education at CIID

Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design hosts a range of educational initiatives, most notably, the one year Interaction Design Programme (IDP) and the CIID Summer School. The educational activities present an integrated environment for participants, faculty and staff to work together in a multicultural, multidisciplinary studio environment.

CIID provides a new model of education that is relevant for both academia and industry. Participants learn how to design & implement products, services and environments - in line with CIID’s vision to inspire action towards better futures. Through collaborative Industry Partnerships and industry facing projects, students are exposed to a broad range of topics and real-world contexts.

The education attracts an impressive and diverse selection of International visiting faculty who are highly regarded as experts in their fields. CIID Education is headed by Simona Maschi and Alie Rose, and many of the CIID faculty have been involved in the now defunct Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Royal College of Art's Interaction Design course, the ITP course at New York University, and the MIT Media Lab and visiting faculty have included people from IDEO, Frog Design, Intel and BBC.

CIID constantly develops the definition of interaction design through the evolving nature of the curricula. Led by a ‘learning by doing’ philosophy and a people-centred approach, students are encouraged to explore topics before generating ideas. These concepts are then prototyped in the well-equipped lab and workshop.

The Interaction Design Programme teaches fundamental skills, methods and tools related to tangible/product interactions, graphical/screen interactions and service design / strategic interactions. Following a rigorous selection process, each year, up to 25 talented people are selected from all over the world to participate in the programme. The IDP puts faith in the diversity of skills, thinking and culture – imparting skills for teamwork, communication and collaboration, not just technical and design skills. Each person brings individual skills with them and the IDP is an effective platform for peer-to-peer learning. Through an intense one-year curriculum, participants are taught to identify opportunities and to create new applications for technology – but more importantly to humanise technology – through the creation of meaningful, pragmatic and socially relevant concepts.

The CIID Summer School provides participants the opportunity to explore interaction design through a series of modular workshops. Reflecting CIID’s multi-disciplinary outlook, these workshops are attended by students and professionals from many backgrounds, ages and cultures.

In November 2012, CIID Education was listed as one of ‘The World’s Top 25 Design Schools’ by Business Insider Magazine.[1]

CIID is part of The Intel Design School Network – a network of five of the leading design schools around the world – alongside Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California College of the Arts in San Francisco, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the Royal College of Art in London.

Founding partners of the education include: Novo Nordisk, Velux, Maersk Line, The Danish Ministry of Economy and Trade, The Danish Ministry of Culture.

Intel and the Lauritzen Fonden sponsored technical equipment for the project it-lab. Manfrotto have sponsored camera and lighting equipment.

From 2008-2010 the IDP Programme was hosted by The Danish Design School - and from 2011-2014 by Kolding School of Design.

CIID Research

Aspiring to break the boundaries of current thinking in the design and use of people-centered, creative, and advanced technologies, CIID conducts research within Cultural Contexts, Ageing & Wellbeing, Urban Computing and Learning & Education. The research teams follow a set of continuously revised themes, put into practice through funded research, consortium, experimental projects and technology development initiatives.

The research is focused on fusing technological potential with a questioning, critical and creative viewpoint, with an aim to create new thinking, systems and concepts that have a meaningful impact on research, community, education and people. Technologies developed with social, design and artistic emphasis take full account of people’s needs, desires and values. Through understanding technologies and the contexts of their use, CIID Research facilitates appropriation of future and emergent technologies into everyday lives and cultures.

CIID Consulting

CIID Consulting works on the crucial early phases of product and service development, helping organisations to create new customer experiences with the power to change markets, through a combination of people-centred research, design and prototyping,

From inventing a consumer electronic product to designing a healthcare service, CIID Consulting works with global leaders, non-profits, municipalities and companies across numerous industries and sectors, to tackle tough business challenges.

CIID Consulting’s expertise in people-centred design builds on industry know-how, providing a collaborative approach that strikes a balance between feasibility and desirability - creating the right environment for concepts to succeed. CIID believes that constantly prototyping physical and digital experience is a sounder, faster way to get market insights with real impact. Design research at CIID Consulting is a qualitative, in-context, investigative process. Observing people in their environments, interacting with the right prototypes, gives us a unique window into that world.

CIID Consulting is an integral part of the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design. It means the Consulting team can spend a portion of each year teaching industry projects to CIID students, and meets regularly with Research fellows from Intel, Sony and other Fortune 500 clients. Together with CIID Research and the CIID Nest incubator, CIID Consulting works in a creative environment that’s unmatched for energy, diversity and innovation output. This unique combination yields remarkable opportunities for growth and exchange.

CIID Nest

The Nest is CIID's early-stage startup incubator which applies people-centered design methods to entrepreneurship. The Nest brings together a small group of talented entrepreneurs to build products and services that create value and are focused on a positive impact.

Working alongside CIID's renowned design consultancy, research arm, and Interaction Design Programme, Nest entrepreneurs spend 4 to 12 months turning their ideas into viable companies with the help of Nest resources and expert advisors. The Nest is sector-agnostic but especially welcomes e-health, IoT, and smart home given CIID's expertise in these spaces.

The Nest has been made possible through generous support from Intel and the Danish Ministry of Business and Growth.
