C-REAL (Hangul: 씨리얼; RR: Ssirieol) is a three-member South Korean girl group formed by Pledis Entertainment and YNB Entertainment in 2011. They debuted with their song No No No No No on October 12, 2011. Their group name was taken from the first letter of each member's name. They are dubbed as the "5-IU Idols" because they are produced by Choi Kab Won, who also produced IU.[1][2]

History

2011: Formation and debut

Pledis Entertainment revealed, "We named the group in hopes that the girls will become 'more real' in their talents through time since they're so young now, but there is also the side reference to the food item. We thought of going with an innocent or R&B inspired name, but the netizens had a lot of fun with C-REAL since it's easy to remember and also fun."

Before debut, top producers support the debut of the group. The girls' debut album consists of work from Choi Kap Won at the lead, Brave Brothers, Kim Do Hoon, Wheesung, PJ, and Shinsadong Tiger. The reason these PDs are banding together to support the girl group is because they believe in the talents the girls have to offer.[2]

C-REAL released two different teasers for the music video of the debut song before releasing the full version on October 11, 2011 in LOEN Entertainment's official YouTube account.[3] Their debut album Round 1 was released the next day.

On November 2011, C-REAL started their Japanese career through a route different from their peers. Following their debut showcase, the girls put their future contract up for auction, signing with the label that provides the best conditions. Unlike other groups who sign with an agency before heading over, the girls will be using the ‘posting system’, a method favored by professional baseball players. Since their debut in October, the girls have been nicknamed as the ‘5-IU idols‘, which has generated enough interest notin only South Korea, but overseas as well. They have been receiving calls from Japan, which is how they came up with their idea for debut.

On December 6, 2011, the group participated in the OST of Flower Boy Ramen Shop. The song is entitled Not With Words.[4]

C-REAL had their first magazine pictorial on Men's Health December 2011 issue.

2012: Love Diary, Sorry But I, Danger Girl

C-REAL released a comeback teaser for the music video of JOMA JOMA on March 1, 2012.[5] The full music video was released on March 6, 2012 with their second mini album entitled Love Diary.[6] They started promoting the song on M! Countdown and other music programs. The mini-album peaked at No. 9 on Gaon Weekly Albums Chart on the second week of March.[7] The promotional single JOMA JOMA landed on No. 27 in Mnet Music Charts and was crowned on 6th place in Inki Coloring TOP 100.[8]

At the beginning of March, the group started trending on real time searching sites, placing 6th on Naver and 7th in Daum. On the same month, C-REAL, together with other idols such as FT Island, ZE:A and Stellar, participated in Hope Concert for multicultural families that was held in Cheonggye Square in Seoul.[9] They started endorsing Undefeated, a clothing line in South Korea.

On May 13, 2012, a teaser for their first single, Sorry But I was revealed.[10] The full music video was uploaded two days later. The single was released the next day.[11] The song has been in the upper ranks of the charts since it was released, and it finally ranked 8th on Melon’s real-time chart. It attracted attention as it entered the top ten with the songs of IU, Baek Ji-young, Girls' Generation-TTS, Sistar, Ulala Session, Park Jin-young, and Busker Busker.[12]

2013 - Present: Lineup Changes & Disbandment Rumours

In March 2013, N.A.P announced the group would be going on indefinite hiatus due to the members returning to school. N.A.P Entertainment released a statement telling fans[13] not to worry, and that C-Real would be releasing new music soon. C-Real's official Facebook page announced that the group would be "restructured" before their next release, and posted a photo of the group as a trio (consisting of Chemi, AnnJ and Effie), thus implying that ReDee and Lenny had left.

As the group has been inactive since September 2014, many fans speculate that the group has disbanded. No official statement has been made by N.A.P regarding the rumours, and the group is still listed on the company's website alongside an image that reads "Wait".
