Buddleja yunnanensis is a vigorous shrub native to Yunnan and much of the rest of south-western China, where it grows on forest margins, thickets, and along streams at elevations of 1,000 – 2,500 m. The shrub was first described and named by Francois Gagnepain in 1915, however its taxonomy remains a matter of contention. [1] [2] [3]
Description
B. yunnanensis can exceed 3 m in height. The opposite lanceolate leaves are of variable size, < 12 cm long by 4.5 cm wide. The lilac flowers form short panicles only 6 cm long by 2 cm wide, located at the ends of the shoots. [1] Chromosome number is 2n = 38 (diploid). [4]
Cultivation
Although hardy, the species is very uncommon in cultivation. Hardiness: USDA zone 8. [1]
