Brett Velicovich is a US Army veteran, drone expert, and businessperson. A Michael Bay-produced biopic on his life is forthcoming from Paramount Pictures.
Military career
As a special operations intelligence specialist and drone operator in the US military, he was responsible for strikes against several of the world’s most wanted terrorists. He is also a former member of Delta Force. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan,[1] and studied the tactics and successful military retaliation techniques against terrorist groups including ISIS and Al-Shabaab.[2]
Business career
He left the military in 2010 and then graduated with an MBA from Duke University.[2] As a civilian, he adapted drones for use in both Somalia and Kenya in order to track endangered big game poachers, such as rhinoceros hunters,[1] through his African Eye Project. He has also been involved in promoting the launch of drone racing at the Dew Tour.[3][4] As of 2015 Velicovich became one of the founders of Expert Drones, a retail chain that sells various models of recreational and commercial-use drones, becoming the first American brick and mortar store to focus solely on drones.[5][6] The stores are run by drone experts.[7]
Publications and film
In 2016 it was announced that Paramount Pictures and Michael Bay were developing a major motion picture biopic on Velicovich’s life, specifically on his work as in special operations and then his work in Africa tracking poachers.[1] The film is based upon an upcoming memoir on Velicovich’s life, co-written by Pulitzer Prize winning author Christopher S. Stewart, which received CIA approval before the rights were sold.[2]
