Brazil's Next Top Model, sometimes abbreviated as BrNTM, is a Brazilian reality show, based on America's Next Top Model and produced by the Brazilian branch of the Latin American cable channel Sony Entertainment Television in association with producer Moonshot Pictures. The show features a group of young female contestants who live together in a house for several weeks while taking part in various challenges, photo shoots and meetings with members of the modeling industry. Usually, one girl is eliminated each week until the final contestant remaining is declared "Brazil's Next Top Model" and wins a modelling contract along with other associated prizes.

History

In early 2007, the Brazilian branch of the TV series-oriented cable channel Sony Entertainment Television decided to create a Brazilian version of the TV show created by Tyra Banks in the United States. The idea was to follow the format developed in the U.S. in terms of the contest itself and the prize to be offered to the winner, although it was decided that the general approach to the candidates would involve "less cruelty" in comparison to the example set by Banks.

One of the production decisions leading up to the show that caught the most media attention was the selection of the Brazilian model who would play the role belonging to Banks in the original. The channel's first choice was Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen, but Fernanda Motta was chosen for the position instead. In order to accept the job, Motta, who lives in New York City, reportedly cancelled most of her agenda so that she could stay in the country for two months.

Enrollment for season one took place during 1–31 July 2007. Shooting for the inaugural season began on 19 August, and it premiered on 3 October.

Although the show was a success, it was ultimately cancelled after the third cycle because Sony did not renew the contract to adapt the original format.

Format

Challenges

The challenge usually focuses on an element important to modeling which will help the girls to improve theirs week's photoshoot. A guest judge, who is unique to each episode, evaluates the contestants and decides the winner of the challenge, who receives a prize for her victory. Sometimes the winner is permitted to choose a certain number of other contestants to receive a similar, but lesser, reward, while the others are given nothing.

Judging and elimination

Based upon the girls' performance in the week's challenge, photoshoot, and general attitude, the judges deliberate and decide which girl must leave the competition. Once the judges have made their decision, the girls are called back into the room. The host, Fernanda, calls out the names of the girls who performed well in the challenge and photoshoot, giving them a copy of their best photo from the shoot. The last two girls, whose names have not been called, are given criticism about why they were in the bottom two, and one is eliminated. The person who is eliminated does not receive a photo.
