Beatrice Lorenzin (born 14 October 1971) is an Italian politician, who has served as minister of health since 28 April 2013.
Early life
Lorenzin was born in Rome on 14 October 1971.[1] After graduating from high school (Liceo classico), she enrolled the faculty of law, but did not complete her studies.
Career
Lorenzin works with the local newspaper "Il Giornale di Ostia"[2] before entering politics, joining in 1996 a local section of the youth movement of Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi's party.[3] She was elected to the city council of Rome in October 1997.[3] In April 1999 she became regional coordinator of the Party's youth movement.[3] In May 2001, she was also elected town councilor of Rome.[3] In 2005 she was appointed coordinator of the Lazio group of Forza Italia and served in the post until 2006.[4] She has been a member of the Italian parliament since 2008.[5]
She was appointed minister of health to the cabinet led by prime minister Enrico Letta on 28 April 2013.[6][7] Lorenzin succeeded Renato Balduzzi in the post.[8]
In November 2013, she left the People of Freedom party and joined the New Centre-Right led by Angelino Alfano.[9][10] Lorenzin continued to serve as the minister of health in the cabinet formed by Matteo Renzi in February 2014.[11]
Controversies
In August 2016 Beatrice Lorenzin announces the celebration of a 'Fertility day' for the following 22 September,[12] but the images chosen for the campaign are perceived as offensive in Italy[13] and abroad.[14] A second pamphlet issued by the Ministry after the first controversy raised a further wave of outrage as perceived as racist.[15][16] The pamphlet was withdrawn and the responsible for the communication of the Ministry, Daniela Rodorigo, was fired in September 2016.[17][18]
