Background
Aziz Mohammad Bhai was born in 1962 to Mohammad Bhai and Khatija Mohammad Bhai, émigrés to Bangladesh from Gujarat, India and is of Gujarati, and Persian descent.[1] He was actively engaged in the management of a steel producer for more than three decades and has been an innovator in a local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry with Ambee Pharmaceuticals. He was involved with several major films produced under his film production company, Ambee Films. In addition to his long list of business accomplishments, Aziz Mohammad Bhai is a life member of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce.[1]
Legal troubles
A high profile member of the business community, he has clashed with figures both during the Ershad military regime and later administrations. He has also been harassed by private individuals seeking financial damages.
When he was arrested on trumped-up charges during the tenure of Hussain Muhammad Ershad as president, the Aga Khan, Prince Karim Aga Khan himself came to Bangladesh secure his release.[2] Further to his release, Bhai was acquitted in what is largely accepted locally to have been a case of personal vendetta.
Further troubles arose when he was accused in 1998 on trumped up charges of murder of the actor Salman Shah. In the Shah case, Bhai was accused of having been seen at the scene of the crime. The case against him was dismissed after Bhai was found to have been in the United Kingdom on the day the crime was committed. In 1999, he was accused of involvement in the death of actor, Sohel Chowdhury.[3][4] The following year, with no evidence brought forward, Bangladeshi High Court judicial authorities demanded the prosecution show cause as to why the case should not be dropped. A charge sheet from January 2000 later emerged showing another man had been accused of Chowdhury's murder by the same prosecutor but that the nature of the charges against the two men was conflicting. The case was never brought forward.
