Ashton-on-Mersey School is a secondary school in Ashton upon Mersey, Greater Manchester, England.
The school is an academy, part of The Dean Trust which includes Broadoak School and Forest Gate Academy in Partington and Lord Derby Academy in Huyton. Ashton-on-Mersey School serves about 1,278 students aged 11 to 18, and is a larger than average school. Ofsted has graded the school "Outstanding" across four inspections.
It was involved in controversy in May 2016 when its headteacher wrote to the parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities who had been placed at the school to inform them that in fact their children would be bussed out to an undersubscribed school within the same Academy Trust, 6 miles away. It was pointed out that the school had a statutory duty to admit children when it was named in their Education Health and Care Plans, and that before those Plans were finalised they must have been consulted and must have satisfied the local authority that they had places and could meet the children's needs. It was also pointed out that there was a potential breach of the duty under the Equality Act 2010 not to discriminate on the grounds of disability, and the ECHR duty to promote inclusive education of disabled children. The Department for Education was reported to be "in discussions with the council and the academy trust."[1]
