Arag is a town in Sangli district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Arag is located in Miraj tahsil. Arag 17.90 km far away from tahsil Miraj and 26.10 km from Sangli. All type of primary needs, services like hospital, education etc. are available here. Nearest villages are laxmiwadi, shindewadi, shipur, bedag, lingnur, narwad, payappachiwadi, vyankochiwadi.

Business and economy

Farming is a main occupation in Arag. 75 percent people are farmer's. Arag is famous for its progressive farming and farmers. Best cultivated farms producing sugar cane, paan mala, jwari, turmeric etc. Entire crop of sugar cane is sold to the sugar factory like Mohanrao Shinde sahkari sakhar karkhana Ltd. Mohannagar, Arag, Vasantdada sahkari sakhar karkhana, Madhavnagar, Sangli etc. Arag is a leading grape and sugar cane producer town in Sangli.

Arag is also famous for "Pan" (Beetel Leaves), you can see acres of Panmala's (Pan Growing Fields) in and around Arag, it's like an Open greenhouse. These pans are sent across India, major to Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, etc. Throughout India these are called as POONA PAN.

Arag is considered as the business centre in eastern part of MIRAJ, located just 6 km from Karnataka Border

Places of Worship

Town has temples of lord Ganesh, Vitthal, Yallamma devi, Mahadev (One Built in recent years and one ancient), Maruti etc. for worship of god and goddess. Arag town also known for Yallamma Devi's yatra. Many people visit the town on January 26 every year during the yatra (Annual Pilgrimage) of goddess Yallamma devi.

It is said that people of Arag tried to uplift or shift the old Mahadev Pind (Shiv Ling) to new location but they couldn't as the Shiv Ling was unmovable. So you can visit two Mahadev mandirs in Arag.

Arag do have a large Jain community both Digambar and Shwetambar, It has an Ancient Digambar Jain mandir built more than 1000 years ago, they say this mandir was built by Daitais in pre historic era. Now due to negligence of Archeological department the local community has started to restructure it. A thorough Jain should visit and have darshan of the "Parshwanath" there, if you do 108 pradakshinas all your wish comes true and fulfilled.
