Anatoly Zatin

Anatoly Zatin (Anatoli Zatine, Russian: Анатолий Борисович Затин) (Uzhhorod, USSR, presently Ukraine, born 23 March 1954), is a composer, pianist, orchestral conductor and pedagogue. Born in the USSR, he acquired Mexican citizenship in 1996.

Education

Born into a musical family, he began his music education at age 3. In 1968 he won first prize at a competition for young composers and pianists in Kiev. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory graduating in Composition and Orchestral Conducting in 1977, Piano in 1979, and finishing postgraduate studies in Composition in 1983. At the conservatory he studied composition with Sergei Slonimsky, orchestral conducting with Ravil Martynov and Alexander Lukashavichus (students of Ilya Musin), and piano with Yuri Ananyev (assistant of Heinrich Neuhaus), Pavel Serebryakov and Abraham Logovinsky. He made his conducting debut with the Leningrad Philharmonic, at that time led by Evgeny Mravinsky, who was also a mentor for Anatoly Zatin.

In 1979 he joined the St Petersburg Union of Composers as the youngest member in the history of this association.

Professional career

He taught at the Modest Mussorgsky Music College in Leningrad, and upon graduating from the conservatory in 1981 served as faculty of composition, orchestration and chamber music at the Leningrad Conservatory (1981–1983). In 1979 he won second prize at the S. Prokofiev Competition in Leningrad.

In 1990 he was presented with the UNICEF Medal of Honour for this activities as pianist and orchestral conductor. At that time he toured Russia, Ukraine, China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, United Kingdom, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Hungary and Italy. In 1988–1991 he made a series of recordings for Melodiya and for the USSR Central Radio conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic. He was artistic director and chief conductor of the Yekaterinburg Theatre of Musical Comedy and the B-A-C-H Orchestra in 1990–1992.

Since 1992 he lives and works in Mexico. He taught at the University of Guadalajara in 1991–2001 and founded the Anatoly Zatin International Music Academy (AIMAZ) in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1996. Since 2001 he is professor at the University of Colima where he coordinated the Music Department in 2001–2011 and since 2011 he is Dean at the Fine Arts Institute (IUBA).^[1]

In 2003 with pianist Vlada Vassilieva he founded Duo Petrof, and in 2008 he was named Petrof Artist internationally.

He has collaborated with such musicians as Timofei Dokschitzer, Vitaly Buyanovsky, Vladimir Kafelnikov, Onorio Zaralli, Ravil Martynov, Vladimir Viardo, Dmitri Bashkirov, Jean Dube^[2] and Shigeyuki Takano.^[3]
