All Nepal National Free Students Union
The All Nepal National Free Students Union (Nepali: अखिल नेपाल राष्ट्रिय स्वतन्त्र विद्यार्थी युनियन, abbreviation अनेरास्ववियु) is the politically based student organization in Nepal. The ANNFSU was founded in 1965. The original ANNFSU was later divided along ideological lines, and there are several organisations that emerged from it. The main ANNFSU grouping today is politically tied to the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). But the abbreviation can be used to denote as a whole communist students organization in Nepal. The letter or word at the end defines particular communist group. For example: ANNFSU-R for Maoists, ANNFSU(Fifth) for Marxist-Leninists. As well as declaring itself a legitimate and independent students' organisation of all progressive, democratic and patriotic students of Nepal, the mainstream ANNFSU is currently a member of the World Federation of Democratic Youth.
History
The organisation was founded in 1965, and was associated with the pro-China trend of the Nepalese communist movement. ANNFSU did however remain as a united organisation, in spite of various splits amongst the radical communists. The ANNFSU gained prominence as an activist movement in a period when large sections of the established communist movement remained in jail.
The freedom obtained by the Nepali people in 1950 was curtailed after King Mahendra’s Proclamation of December 15, 1960.This proclamation ended the multiparty system and put a prohibition on the political parties. The presence of All Nepal Student Federation was losing its importance as it was not being able to show its role against the autocratic and tyrannical Panchayat Regime. To uproot this regime and establish the rights of Nepali citizens and students there was immense necessity of a student union. Thus, with the continuous effort of 3 years i.e. from 1962 to 1965,All Nepal National Free Students’ Union was founded on 14 May 1965.However ,this name was introduced through the 2nd National convention on 1968.It is popularly called ANNFSU or students even call “Akhil” which mean all.
The indivisible unity prevalent in the diversified caste, creed, culture, sex, ethnicity and other geographical sectors is the Nationality of our country Nepal. ANNFSU has envisioned the preservation of nationality can be carried out by considering the diversity of the country. Addition to that ANNFSU has been working to protect the sovereignty of the nation. As the part of this, it has been carrying out campaign to stop the encroachment of Nepali land, protection of rights of citizens, proper use of natural resources. It has been carrying out student based movement in regards three major issues i.e. Nationality, People Oriented Education System and Livelihood. Saluting the blood that was shed by the former leaders for nationality and national sovereignty, ANNFSU would like to always stand for the progressive Nationality for the prosperity of Nepalese and Nepali Students.
In 1979 ANNFSU was split. One section would be known as ANNFSU (Fifth) (which was tied to the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist)) and the other grouping became known as ANNFSU (Sixth) (which was connected to the Communist Party of Nepal (Fourth Convention)). The former group is the current mainstream ANNFSU connected to CPN(UML). A section of ANNFSU, which was in favour to support of multi-party democracy instead of Panchayat autocracy regime in Nepal, it established Nepal Progressive Student Union and went in to the people to convince them to cast their votes in favour of multi-party democracy in referendum.
In 1992 a section the students wing of the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist), the Nepal Progressive students Union, merged with ANNFSU. Nabina Lama is the current president of the organization. The vice presidents are Sunita Baral, Rashmi Acharya,Sailesh Lama and Mahesh Bartaula. Ain Mahar is the general secretary and Jhapendra Khatri is the treasurer. Rabindra Adhikari is the In-charge of ANNFSU.[1]
