Automotive brakes are at the core of Akebono's business. The main products include automotive disc brakes and drum brakes as well as frictional material based disc brake pads and drum brake linings that are mounted to those brakes. Sales of products for automobiles including products for motorcycles account for roughly 90% of all sales.

Akebono controls roughly 50% of Japan's market share for automotive disc brake pads manufactured on an OEM basis (for assembly on new cars) and approximately 20% of the worldwide OEM disc brake pad market.
