Akebono Brake Industry Co., Ltd. (曙ブレーキ工業 Akebono burēki kōgyō) is a Japanese manufacturer of components for automobiles, motorbikes, trains, and industrial machinery.
First founded on 27 January 1929, it is now a large company with a significant overseas presence. In addition to its headquarters in Hanyu, Saitama and Nihonbashi, it also has facilities in other locations in Japan, such as Fukushima. In the United States, it has facilities in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Farmington Hills, Michigan, Columbia, South Carolina, Glasgow, Kentucky, and Clarksville, Tennessee. In China, it has plants in Guangzhou and Suzhou. In Indonesia and Vietnam, it has a partnership with Astra. In Europe, it has facilities in Arras and Gonesse in France, and also has a UK presence for its work with the McLaren Formula 1 team.
Business and products
Automotive brakes are at the core of Akebono's business. The main products include automotive disc brakes and drum brakes as well as frictional material based disc brake pads and drum brake linings that are mounted to those brakes. Sales of products for automobiles including products for motorcycles account for roughly 90% of all sales.
Akebono controls roughly 50% of Japan's market share for automotive disc brake pads manufactured on an OEM basis (for assembly on new cars) and approximately 20% of the worldwide OEM disc brake pad market.
