AANGILAM (ஆங்கிலம்) is a bilingual edublog, launched in 2007,[3] which dedicated to Tamil-medium English language learners and now it is the most popular site among Tamils around the world, especially for those who wants to learn English grammar through Tamil. The blog also provides a free downloadable facility that enables to download its lessons as PDF files.
History
Aangilam was launched on November 29, 2007 as an educational blog,[4] and its first month traffic was only 212 views. However, a short time after launch the site fellow bloggers, websites, and forums spontaneously reviewed or/and published some positive introductory articles about it; as a result, the blog became popular in the Tamil blogosphere as a Tamil-medium English language teaching site.[5][6][7][8][9][10] Thereafter, traffic to Aangilam increased rapidly.[11] Although the blog initially only aimed to provide basic English grammar lessons, it later focused on various English language related topics, which particularly suited to Tamil-medium English learning environment, such as English history, pronunciation, spoken English, glossary terms, and so on. As of 2015, the blog had reached more than ten million views and it is continued to grow constantly.
Notability
The blog's unique contents and effective explanations have been attracted by thousands of visitors; meanwhile, a hundred of blogs and websites have linked from their sites to Aangilam.[12][13] Contrarily, some others have republished its entire or all most all contents on their own sites without asking permission or giving attribution to the original site.[14][15][16][17] Interestingly, a number of blogs and Facebook-like-pages have just created for (copy and paste) republish its posts.[18][19][20][21]
Meaning of "Aangilam"
The site's name "aangilam" is a Tamil word which meaning is "English" in English language. On the other hand, it's a Tamil exonym-word for refer to English, so the name choice of the blog is well-suited for the site's purpose.
Audience
The blog's major visitors arrive through direct visits, organic search results, and referring websites. Comparably, the site gains minor visits from social media networking sites.
