The 2015 SIU Edwardsville Cougars men's soccer team represented Southern Illinois University Edwardsville during the 2015 NCAA Division I men's soccer season, the school's 49th season. The Cougars were coached in 2015 by Mario Sanchez. The team played their home games on Bob Guelker Field at the Ralph Korte Stadium as an affiliate member of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).[1][2]

Off season

A nationwide search for a new head coach began in December, 2014, and on January 27, 2015 Mario Sanchez, the associate head coach of the Louisville Cardinals was introduced as the new Cougars head coach.

Preseason

Twelve players returned from the 2014 squad that won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship tournament. They were joined by four redshirted players, including a starting midfielder from 2013 who missed the 2014 season due to injuries and another from 2014 who was injured in the first game and missed the rest of the season. They were also joined by eleven incoming freshmen and two transfer students who started games for their previous schools.

In the Spring schedule, the Cougars played "friendlies" versus two United Soccer League professional sides and three Division I opponents. Losing only the first match, 1–2 to Saint Louis FC at Korte Stadium on an 89th-minute goal during a snow storm, and tying Lipscomb 1–1, the Cougars defeated pro side Louisville City FC 1–0, ACC powerhouse and former Big Central opponent (2014 #18) Louisville 1–0 in Louisville, and former MVC rival (2014 #7) Creighton 3–1 in Omaha, yielding a final Spring record of 3–1–1.[3]

In the Fall, the Cougars have friendlies scheduled against one-time Big Central rival Milwaukee and two sides that were in last season's NCAA tournament, American Conference tourney champion Tulsa and Big East perennial power Xavier (preseason 2015 #19).

In the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll of coaches and sports information directors, the Cougars were the pick to win the regular season crown, ahead of Missouri State, Loyola, and Bradley. Additionally, SIUE defenders Justin Bilyeu and Austin Ledbetter were named to the preseason 1st Team.[4]

The regular season followed three exhibition games in the middle of August. In the first exhibition, the 19th ranked Xavier Crusaders scored a first half goal and hung on to defeat SIUE 1–0 at Korte Stadium.[5] The Cougars then travelled to Tulsa, downing the unranked, but highly regarded Golden Hurricane 2–0.[6] Finishing off, the preseason, The Cougars returned home to down the Horizon League's Milwaukee 2–0 and conclude the exhibitions with a 2–1–0 record and a combined off-season record of 5–2–1.[7]

Season

The season began on August 28 in a physical contest at Bowling Green of the Mid-American Conference that saw 29 fouls and 4 yellow cards. A total defensive lapse by the Cougars in the first half allowed BGSU's explosive offense to score three times in less than five minutes. The Cougars then settled down and fairly well took control, eventually evening the shots at 11 apiece, but SIUE was only able to tally a single Danzy goal, and fell to the Falcons 3–1.[8]

The second game of the season-opening road trip had the Cougars facing the defending Horizon League champion Oakland Golden Grizzlies. A close-played contest shown live on ESPN3 was won by a now-familiar Danzy leaping header on a long pass from Awad after Dal Santo had kept things even with a daring, sliding second half save.[9]

On August 31, after scoring goals in both of the Cougars' first two games, Jabari Danzy was named the first Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the season.[10]

Two UMKC set pieces ruined the Cougars' home opener. Dal Santo rejected a corner kick in the fourth minute, only to have the rebound driven right back into the net, and a second half corner was headed past him for a second Kangaroos' score. While SIUE dominated possession and took seventeen shots, both the KC keeper and one of their defenders made repeated flashy saves to turn away everything the Cougars threw at them and preserve their 2–0 win.[11]

SIUE returned to the win column 2–0 over Memphis when Jambga scored his first two goals as a Cougar, with both assisted by Awad. Dal Santo made two saves as the Cougar defense stifled the Tiger's offense while the offense got off 14 shots.[12]

In the first of two games in San Diego, the Cougars and San Diego State fought to a scoreless draw in a game marred by 20 fouls and 8 yellow cards–4 for each team. The Aztec's keeper had three saves on SIUE shots, but the Cougars' defense did not allow a single shot on goal.[13]

In the first half of the game at the University of San Diego, the Cougar's offense was the star, with Jambga assisting Ebbesen with one crossing pass and then sending a second to Hull, who was one-on-one with a charging keeper.In the second half, the SIUE defense seemed to be playing with the USD offense, as if daring them to try to score by repeatedly taking the ball away and giving it right back for the Toreros to make another attempt. When the defenders were not blocking or stealing, Dal Santo made five saves, and the Cougars got the 2–0 win.[14]

After the California trip, Austin Ledbetter was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week.[15]

After a nine-day layoff, the Cougars traveled to Wisconsin. SIUE's offense dominated the first half, and in the 44th minute, Bilyeu headed Awad's free kick to Jambga, who headed it past the Badger keeper to give the Cougars the halftime lead. When Bilyeu went off for much of the second half with an injury, the SIUE defense lost some cohesion, and the offense for the Big Ten Badgers threatened but failed to get more than one shot on goal past the Cougars. Once the SIUE defense returned to form, Gutierrez stole the ball near midffield and hit Christianson with a through ball that he fired low and past the keeper to give the Cougars a 2–0 win.[16]

The Cougars opened the MVC season at defending regular season champion Missouri State. For most of regulation time, two similar teams played evenly, both offenses searching for a weakness in the opposing defense. The scales tilted in the Bears favor when Danzy was sent off for a hard tackle in the 85th minute. MSU then put heavy pressure on SIUE in the remaining time and into extra time. With the announcer counting down the seconds in the first extra period, Woods hustled to get off a corner kick, driving it straight to Griffin, who headed it past Dal Santo with only two seconds left on the clock. MSU ended the Cougars' shutout streak at 501:46 as they took the win.[17]

For Homecoming, in front of a crowd of nearly 2,400, the Cougars exploded for a four-goal shutout of MVC opponent Central Arkansas. Gutierrez got the only first half goal (his first as a Cougar) on a penalty kick in the 7th minute. Two and a half minutes into the second half, Gutierrez passed to Awad, who also scored his first Cougar goal. A bit over three minutes later, SIUE's senior veterans took over, as Scheipeter got his first goal since last season's NCAA tournament on a pass from Lane. Having opened the scoring, Gutierrez also closed it out, nailing an unassisted shot from ten yards out in the 71st minute. Through it all, Dal Santo recorded six saves on the way to his sixth shutout of the season.[18]

After scoring 2 goals and an assist in the Homecoming game, Ivan Gutierrez was the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week.[19]

At undefeated and 19th/21st ranked Butler, McHugh got his head on a goal kick near midfield in the fourth minute; Jambga got to the ball before the Bulldogs for a turnover and drove straight at the goalkeeper, who only managed to get a fingertip on the hard shot from seventeen yards out that gave the Cougars the early lead. Butler had a chance to tie shortly before halftime when a Cougar committed a foul in the box, but Dal Santo dived to his left to make the save on the penalty kick and preserve the SIUE lead. He was unable to repeat the feat when a second foul in the box was called in the 86th minute, and Adkins scored on his PK to tie the game at 1. In the final minute of regulation time, Awad passed to Christianson, who was double covered, but went right at the keeper and chipped the ball over him for the goal that gave the Cougars the upset win.[20]

The Cougars traveled to Chicago to face the Big Ten's Northwestern at UIC's Flames Field due to construction at NU's Evanston campus. As at Butler, Jambga opened the scoring, this time, going on-on-two versus the Wildcat defense before putting the ball past the keeper at the far post. The Cougars fairly well dominated the offense, outshooting the Wildcats 12-8 and 8-3 on corner kicks, despite having 23 fouls called on them versus only 10 on the hosts. Lane made the score 2-0 with his first goal of the season in the 57th minute, while the SIUE defense limited the NU offense to only 2 shots on goal. In the 69th minute, Roberge headed a pass from Keliher past Dal Santo on a throw-in set piece to pull Northwestern to within one, but the Cougar defense shut the Wildcats down the rest of the way to preserve the win.[21]

Scoring the first goal against both Butler and Northwestern earned Devyn Jambga. the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week.[22] He was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.[23]

SIUE gained its fourth straight win by downing Evansville 2–0. After controlling the ball for most of the scoreless first half, the Cougars got on the board when Lane headed a long Hackett throw-in over the Purple Aces' keeper 64 minutes in for his second consecutive game-winner. Fifteen minutes later, another throw-in was headed a couple of times before Duncan sent it to Bilyeu at the top of the box, who fired a blazing shot past the keeper to give the Cougars the margin of victory. The defense limited Evansville to only one shot on goal, as Dal Santo recorded his seventh shutout.[24]

With their record at 8–3–1. the Cougars were gaining national recognition. SIUE received votes in the NSCAA national coaches poll for the second week in row,[25] and were ranked 6th in the NSCAA West Region poll which includes the 25 teams of the Missouri Valley Conference, the Summit League, and the Western Athletic Conference.[26] In the College Soccer News Top 30 National Poll for the week ending October 18, 2015, the Cougars were ranked #25.[27]

The Cougars went to Des Moines to face surprising MVC co-leader Drake. The tenacious Bulldogs offense pulled out all the stops in the first half, outshooting SIUE 7–1, including six shots on goal and with Edel getting one past Dal Santo in the 24th minute to give Drake a 1–0 lead that they took into halftime. In the second half, the Cougars' offense moved to the fore, outshooting the Bulldogs 10–6 for the half. In the 55th minute, Bilyeu fired a cross through the box, and Danzy headed it in for his 3rd goal of the season. In the 71st minute, Wypych headed Edel's crossing pass in to put Drake back in the lead. Less than 2 1/2 minutes later, a Danzy shot was saved, but the keeper could not corral the ball, and Danzy tapped the rebound into the net to again tie the score. In the first overtime period, the Bulldogs offense again rose up, outshooting SIUE 4–1, but the Cougars defense met the challenge to maintain the tie. Nearly halfway through the second extra period, Awad took possession and passed to Bilyeu. Bilyeu passed ahead to Gutierrez, who loosed a screamer from 35 yards out that went just past the diving Drake keeper to give SIUE the golden goal victory. Although Drake scored two goals, Dal Santo tied his career high with eight saves, while his teammates added three more. With their fifth consecutive win, the Cougars tied Drake for second in the MVC standings, with conference leader Bradley next up on the schedule.[28]

Jabari Danzy's two goals versus Drake earned him a second Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor.[29] He also was the second Cougar player in three weeks to be named a member of the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.[30]

On Halloween, the Cougars faced the conference leader for the second week in row, making the journey up the road to meet Bradley in Peoria. The Braves took an early lead when their first shot of the game was what the official scorer termed a "...rocket side volley..." from just inside the box by Garcia that beat Dal Santo. Five minutes later, for SIUE's first shot, Garcia's high school teammate Lane took a pass from Hull and fired a crossing pass that Scheipeter buried to tie the game. The Cougars missed an opportunity to take the lead before halftime; after a foul in the box, Bradley's keeper guessed right and dove right for a save of Ledbetter's penalty kick. Once again SIUE was dominant on both ends of the field, outshooting the Braves and tying their season high with seventeen shots while holding Bradley to six, with only one shot on goal. The Cougars pulled out another late comeback after a BU foul with less than 5 1/2 minutes remaining. Gutierrez took the free kick near the end line, a crossing pass that Danzy headed into the goal for the winner of SIUE's sixth straight victory. [31]

SIUE closed out the non-conference schedule by hosting Eastern Illinois on a Tuesday night in a game that was nowhere near as close as the Cougars' winning 2–0 score. In the 9th minute, Gutierrez took control of the ball near the end, lofted a pass toward the post, and Awad headed it in to open the .scoring. In the 41st minute, Kendall-Moullin was open in the box and waving for the ball; when an EIU player laid him out on the turf, he was awarded a penalty kick and put the Cougars up 2–0. The remainder of the game was dominated by SIUE's stingy defense, allowing only three high and wild shots in the game. The referee seemed unwilling to slow down the game by calling fouls. No call was made when Duncan was dumped while head-on with the Panthers' keeper, but when Danzy was pulled down in the 64th minute, the Cougars were awarded a second penalty kick. Eastern's Novotny, one of the NCAA saves leaders, out-guessed Kendall-Moullin on his second PK attempt and made the save to maintain the two-goal margin. Meanwhile, Dal Santo faced no shots on goal in recording his eighth shutout as the SIUE win streak stretched to 7 games.[32]

On Senior Night, the regular season closer featured two of the top defensive teams and two of the top goalkeepers in the NCAA, with the Cougars (#16 Team Goals Against Average) and Kyle Dal Santo (#8 GGA) facing the Loyola Ramblers (#2 Team GGA) and Tim Dobrowolski (#5 GGA). As expected, defense was dominant in the first half, with the Cougars allowing only three shots and being limited to two, and both keepers making only a single save apiece en route to a 0–0 halftime. In the second half, SIUE stepped up their offense, outshooting the Ramblers 11–3, but both keepers maintained clean sheets. The Cougars were called for a foul in the box in the 86th minute, setting up a Loyola penalty kick and a chance for them to take the lead, but Dal Santo dove left and blocked the shot, setting up the golden goal overtime. In the 94th minute, Danzy took control of a long clearance shot near midfield. He broke toward the goal on the right, with Jambga paralleling down the middle. As the defenders closed on Danzy in the box, he passed to Jambga, who tapped in the goal, winning the game and the outright 2015 MVC regular season championship.[33]

After the Cougars won their first MVC regular season championship, Devyn Jambga was named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time, and Kyle Dal Santo was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week.[34]

The MVC Awards were announced at the banquet held on the evening between the tournament quarterfinals and semifinals. Head Coach Mario Sanchez and his staff (David Korn, Scott Gyllenborg, Tim Boruff, and Billy Berger) were named the MVC Coaching Staff of the Year. Jabari Danzy and Austin Ledbetter were named to the MVC All-Conference First Team. Kyle Dal Santo, Devyn Jambga, Ivan Gutierrez, Paul Scheipeter, Justin Bilyeu, and Brett Lane were all named to the MVC All-Conference Second Team. Keehan McHugh was named both an All-Conference Honorable Mention and a member of the MVC All-Freshman Team.[35]

Postseason

The 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament was hosted by the Cougars on November 11, 13 & 15 at SIUE's Ralph Korte Stadium.[36] The 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship would begin during the following week.

The Cougars first match of the MVC Championships was a rematch of last Saturday's MVC finale versus Loyola. As in the first meeting, the game was an epic struggle between the two top defenses in the Valley. In the first half, the Cougars' offense outshot the Ramblers 8–2, while in the second half, Loyola's offense came to the fore, leading 6 shots to 3. Both goalkeepers and their defenders, among the best in the NCAA, kept clean sheets through regulation time. SIUE seemed to gain an advantage when Loyola went a man down due to a red card in the 86th minute, but the Ramblers continued to force the action, and the Cougars were unable to formulate an effective offensive plan. As in the teams' first meeting, the game went into golden goal extra time tied 0–0, and, after two ten-minute overtimes, the tie still stood, leaving the result to a penalty shoot-out. Both teams made their first three shots count, then both missed the fourth with high shots. Loyola's fifth shot was up to the MVC Player of the Year, who also missed high. The Cougars' team captain Ledbetter then fired a shot right down the middle, past the Loyola keeper to give the Cougars the win and set them up to defend their tournament championship in the Sunday title game.[37]

In the MVC final, the Cougars were pitted against the 3rd seeded Drake Bulldogs, who had already won two tournament games. SIUE came out hard, dominating possession during the first half and outshooting DU 9 to 1, but the Bulldogs' defense held firm for a 0–0 halftime score. The second half was more evenly played, but Drake was a bit more effective. When the Cougars failed to clear a ball in the 77th minute, Dal Santo made a last instant save that set up a Drake corner kick; the kick bounced around in the six yard box before SIUE finally seemed to clear it, but it went straight toward Drake freshman reserve Ciszweski, who blasted a return shot through the crowd in front of the net that Dal Santo barely saw and had no chance of stopping. The Cougars then intensified their effort after falling behind, but as in the semis, seemed unable to put together an effective attack. In the end, Drake earned its first MVC Tournament title since 2009, and SIUE would have to wait to find out if their record was good enough to get an at-large bid to return to the NCAA Tournament.[38]

At the conclusion of the conference tournament, defenders Justin Bilyeu and Austin Ledbetter and goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo were named to the 2015 MVC Men's Soccer All-Tournament Team. [39]

With a Rating Percentage Index (RPI) of 39 (out of 206 teams), the Cougars were the 28th team not to receive an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. Since there were only 24 at-large berths available, SIUE was passed over.[40][41]

On November 23, Jacob Wieser was named to the 2015 MVC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team. [42]

On November 24, Jacob Wieser was named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America Men’s Soccer First Team. [43]

On December 9, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region teams were announced. Austin Ledbetter was named to the NCAA Division I Men's All-West Region First Team. Jabari Danzy was named to the NCAA Division I Men's All-West Region Second Team. Justin Bilyeu was named to the NCAA Division I Men's All-West Region Third Team.[44]

One January 14, Justin Bilyeu was selected by the New York Red Bulls as the 11th pick in the 2016 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

Coaches

Mario Sanchez is the first year head coach. David Korn, who was interim co-head coach last season is the associate head coach. Scott Gyllenborg is in his second season as an assistant coach, Tim Boruff is the first-year goalkeepers coach, and Billy Berger is director of operations after two seasons as a graduate assistant coach.
